Perhaps the first image of a grieving dog. Circa 1912, “Master’s Grave” postcard.

This photo was taken at the funeral service of Navy Seal Jon Tumilson. Tumilson, 35, was one of 30 American troops, including 22 Navy SEALs, who were killed when a Taliban insurgent shot down a Chinook helicopter with a rocket-propelled grenade on Aug. 6, 2011. “Hawkeye walked up to the casket at the beginning of the service and then dropped down with a heaving sigh as about 1,500 mourners witnessed a dog accompanying his master until the end.”  Jon grew up in Rockford, Iowa, where I went to high school.

And this. Wiley is a therapy wolfdog who helps veterans with PTSD return from war. She was in love with her grandmother, and when she passed away, this was Wiley’s heartbreaking reaction on her grave. Critics say Wiley has an issue breathing. Her owner said she has never before, nor since, reacted that way.

Do these images prove dogs grieve a human loss? Probably not. Do they disprove it? Nope.
