Here comes the sun [08.04.15]

August 4, 2015

I wear bifocal eyeglasses and have sun-sensitive eyes. Sunglasses are a must. When you wear glasses you have several options for sun protection:

  • The baseball cap. It messes with my hair.
  • Prescription sunglasses. They mess with my budget.
  • Clip-on flip-ups. If you get a pair with rubber-coated clips, they don’t scratch your lenses but do leave smudge marks.
  • Sunglasses that fit over your eyeglasses.

Introduced to me by childhood peep and frequent commenter, DJ Carney, there are several brands. Google, “sunglasses that fit over eyeglasses.” D’oh. I got the appropriately named, Fitover brand. Deals can be found on various websites.

Love them! They…

  • have just the right degree of protection
  • are polarized to reduce glare
  • have side lenses for your peripheral vision
  • are less expensive than prescription glasses
  • make me look cool

Declaration: The KUM Long Point Pencil Sharpener is the best on the market.

It has two #2-sized blades, marked 1 and 2. Run your Ticonderoga through hole number one first. This shaves away the wood. Run it through the second hole and it sharpens the lead to a fine point. Guess what? It’s German engineered. This particular model has an additional two sharpeners for 2mm  and 3.2mm automatic pencil leads. Thank me later.

Since this is the weekend, and a  l o n g  one at that, it seemed appropriate to do this post.

There are a lot of remedies for the dreaded hangover, including:

  • Before you go to bed have a shot… of wheatgrass.
  • Hydrate to clear out the toxins.
  • Try Tiger Balm to ease the headache.
  • Soak in wasabi to detox your body. I read it on the internet.
  • Hair of the dog (i.e., start drinking as soon as you get up.)

Or, my personal favorite, Toniiq (pronounced like tonic) available on Amazon prime and currently almost half-priced.

I can’t say for a fact it works, because, well, how can I know for sure what I would have felt like without taking it. But the couple of times I overdid it, I took Toniiq and felt pretty good the next day. You take the two black capsules at night followed by the one white capsule in the morning. It’s worth a shot! Pun quite possible intended.

The boscia Konjac Cleansing Sponge. I Love this thing! Made of konjac root which has been part of Japanese beauty rituals for over 1,500 years. I bought mine at Sephora but similar sponges are available on Amazon. To use, wet the sponge, put a little cleaning gel on it and wash your face. It gently cleanses and exfoliates, and lasts two to three months. Plus, it makes washing my face a little more fun. Can’t argue with that.

Luxury item to consider when you have some spare scratch, L’Occitane Cleansing and Softening Shower Gel with Almond  Oil. Yum. Those frogs know a thing or two about skin care.

I use it when I shave my legs. Guys, you can use it on your face. It’s gentle and luxurious. And lasts a long time, in part because I don’t use it as an overall shower gel. Guys, you can use it on your face. Makes a great gift to yourself. Available at Sephora.

On Being Catholic [08.08.14]

August 8, 2014

It’s Friday. When I was growing up, Catholics could not eat meat on Fridays. Our neighbors were Lutheran. There was slight tension between the two at that time. They called us mackerel smackers. When the husband of a good friend recently converted to Catholicism I gave him a card, “welcome to the club,” and a can of mackerels.

I’m lapsed, in part because I do not agree with the Church’s stand on some issues, birth control for one. But I adore Pope Francis. He’s a progressive Pope of the people. He dines wiith The Vatican staff. He has only one lung. True story.

Vatican II brought about a few changes I remember; doing away with the Friday ban on meat and switching from Mass in Latin to English. That was the first step in my disillusionment with Catholicism.  Mass said in Latin was melodic and somewhat mystical. I loved the ceremony of Mass. Latin was a part of that. Take that away and it just wasn’t as much fun. I actually had a point to make but lost my train of thought.

Oh, it was about this fragrance my niece turned me on to, Comme des Garcons Incense Avignon. It reminds me of the incense used at High Mass which reminds me of my childhood (much like the smell of grass does.) Anyway, that was my point. I’m lapsed but I make Rosaries, follow the new guy on Facebook, burn incense reminiscent of High Mass and study Latin.

CB I Hate Perfume

My niece, Elizabeth, turned me on to this Brooklyn shop. I live in the Midwest so I’m left to shop online. I have no problem shopping online.

One of my favorite scents is, grass. It reminds me of my dad mowing the yard. I used to buy the Mottura brand fragrance, Grass, at Things & Things & Things in Iowa City.

T&T&T was a great three-floor shop of wonderful household items, trendy clothing and amazing body products. Over the years, it went from the three floors of  T&T&T to the two-floor Things & Things, to a one-floor Things and then, unfortunately, down to a no-floor nothing.

Mottura sold its fragrance line to The Gap who kept Heaven,  Air,  and a few other scents but eliminated Grass. I don’t know if they carry any of these fragrances anymore.

Anyways (tribute to my friend, Pete)

I loved that Grass fragrance! It just put me in a good place. I’d had no luck finding anything even close until my niece wrote about CB I Hate Perfume in her blog on the Kenyon Review. (A real blog, unlike this one.) She now has the blog, Nosy Girl.

I ordered the travel-sized, Grass. Received it last Friday and absolutely love it! In fact, this morning I ordered the larger size.

If you’re anywhere near this shop, check it out. If you live in the outer limits like I do, there’s always the online experience. You’ll be taking a chance, shopping by fragrance name and description. Although, CB was spot on with grass.
